Port Kembla is one of three major ports in NSW. Established in the 1890's to facilitate the export of coal in the Illawarra region, it has undergone and continues to undergo significant growth.
The port has seen diversification not only in the type of trade, but the size, type and quantity of ships coming through the port.
To assist in improving operational efficiency, Port Kembla Ports Authority contracted McConnell Dowell to design and build a new tug berth facility which also included the dredging of 28,000m³ of material from the harbour.
Coastwide Civil won the contract to reclaim approximately 3000m² of land and for theconstruction of an adjoining breakwater approximately 250m long. Coastwide are also sourcing, grading and transporting armour rock for this project.
Port Botany is Australia's second largest container port with trade forecast to double by 2020. It is a crucial hub for more than $40 billion each year employing up to 10,000 people. To sustain future long term growth Sydney Ports Authority has undertaken major expansion of its container facilities.
In 2008 Sydney Ports Authority awarded the Design and Construction of the new terminal to the Baulderstone Hornibrook - Jan De Nul consortium. This includes 60 hectares of reclaimed land including five new berths, construction of community features such as a new breakwaters, groynes, lookouts and footpaths including the dredging of 11 million cubic metres of sand.
Because of our knowledge and expertise of rock revetments and marine civil works including the placement of a large volume of dredge material, the Baulderstone Hornibrook Jan De Nul consortium approached Coastwide Civil to construct the breakwaters, groynes and rock revetment structures for the project.
As with all our projects Coastwide Civil approached this project by forming a good relationship with the consortium.
Rock Revetments
Total foreshore work ia approximately 5km long, and is performed by long or medium reach excavators utilising Topcon's 3D GPS equipment. In essence, Baulderstone Hornibrook surveyor's provides raw data in DXF format, which is converted and downloaded to the excavator. The excavator operator effectively has a 3D view of his works area.
Conformance surveying is done inside the excavator, which enables survey points to be picked up by the bucket without the need for a surveyor to go into the water or onto the rocks negating any safety issues.
Car Parks
To assist Baulderstone with the construction of the car parks on the Foreshore road Coastwide Civil used Caterpillar 140M graders with millimetre control to grade the pavement to the required tolerances.
In October 2009 Jan De Nul awarded Coastwide Civil the contract to assist with the placement of 11 million cubic metres of dredge material for the land reclamation. This is currently being done at a rate of 120,000 cubic metres per 24 hour shift with a fleet of standard D6 to D10 Dozers and swamp dozers, with the assistance of medium and long reach excavators, dump trucks and front end loaders.
Northern Distributor Extension - Wollongong
Funded by the NSW Government the Northern Distributer project consists of a three kilometre four lane carriageway between Bellambi and Bulli including bridges, footpaths and cycleways costing a total of $101 million.
The following principles were adopted for the project to ensure the desired outcome:
Increased safety for all road users.
Reduced visual impact.
Integrated built elements.
Minimised impact on ecologies and cultural sites.
Incorporated environmentally sustainable urban and landscape design solutions.
The contract was won by Reed Construction who approached and contracted Coastwide Civil to do all the bulk earthworks operations to RTA R44 specification including pavement works. This includes the construction of sedimentary ponds and the placing and conformance of heavily bound base material.
Our works include deep cut to fill, lime stabilisation, acid sulphate soil treatment, drainage blankets, friable asbestos remediation and all pavement works.
The work was performed by our dedicated team of engineers, surveyors and operators using a range of machines from our fleet.
All paving was conformed using our Caterpillar 140M graders with Topcon millimetre control to achieve the tight RTA tolerances.
The realignment of the Princes Highway at Conjola Mountain
The Prices Highway is the main road link for traffic travelling between Sydney and Wollongong and the SouthCoast.
ConjolaMountain is located approximately 46 kilometres south of Nowra on the Princes Highway. The section of the highway being upgraded is approximately 3.5 kilometres in length and has a steep and winding descent from the north to a narrow bridge at Conjola Creek.
Project Benefits
·Improved safety and travel conditions by improving the highway alignment and replacing the narrow ConjolaCreekBridge and approaches.
·Improved access for residents including the provision of two new underpasses.
·Improved traffic flow by providing a new northbound overtaking lane between ConjolaCreekBridge and Bendalong Road (Red Head Road).
The contract was awarded to BMD Construction who approached Coastwide to do the following:-
Deep rock excavation including filling and consolidating
Major batter construction in rock
Sub-grade preparation
Smz zone installation and pavement works
Tallawarra Power Station - Plant Civil Works - Dapto, NSW
Coastwide Civil's contract at Tallawarra Power Station was both challenging and rewarding. Our brief was to demolish the existing Power Station which included the remediation of friable asbestos waste, and to continue with infrastructure works at the existing site.
Coastwide along with Workcover pioneered the use of PCF explosives in Australia for clearing friable asbestos in contaminated areas.
To date our work at Tallawarra Power Station has included :-
